Review
After an illiterate stooge who takes part in a traveling medicine show makes his way into a strange town he is arrested on vagrancy charges. Unfortunately, the rather corrupt officials in town have mistaken him for the inspector general, believing the inspector is traveling in disguise. Afraid that he will find out they have been pocketing the tax money, they try to kill him several times but bungle the effort each time.
This sets the stage for a good bit of zaniness with Danny Kayes' talents on display throughout the entire film. This film is a perfect example of Kaye's tremendous acting ability. Throughout the late 1940s he was known as one of the best movie comedians in the business.
The film was based on a 19th century play written by Nicolai Gogol. Overall, this is an excellent film, which lends itself well to relaxing and enjoying a good comedic satire.
