Title - Catholics
Starring - Trevor Howard, Martin Sheen, Michael Gambon
Directed by - Jack Gold
Producer(s) - Barry Levinson
Screenwriter(s) - Brian Moore

Review

While this film would be appreciated by most Catholics, it also has value even if you don’t happen to be Catholic. Individuals growing up during the Baby Boomer generation, in particular, will find merit in this film and be able to relate to the story line.

A priest who is sent to Rome to an Irish monastery is portrayed by a very young Martin Sheen. The purpose of his assignment is to stop the monks in the monastery from celebrating the Mass in Latin. The hierarchy of the Vatican has been attempting to modernize the Mass around the world and have it celebrated in the vernacular and to promote the idea that the Transubstantiation of the wine and bread is actually symbolic and not real.

The problem is that the priests in the monastery have become very accustomed to celebrating the Mass in a traditional sense. Due to the fact that the ceremony has been televised there are even more problems. The abbot of the monastery, portrayed by Trevor Howard, realizes he must find a way to obey the dictate given to him while at the same time preventing all out rebellion among his monks.

All of the performances in the film are excellent. While it may be a bit difficult for someone who was not born a Catholic prior to 1960 to fully comprehend exactly the dilemma of this film, it still comes across quite well. The conflict between faith and conscience and the vow of obedience is clearly demonstrated.

Title - Legend of Big Foot
Starring - None - Documentary
Directed by - Harry Stuart Winer
Producer(s) - Stephen Houston Smith
Screenwriter(s) - Harry Stuart Winer, Paula Labrot

Review

If you’re a Big Foot legend fan you will absolutely love this movie. Actually, in all honesty, it’s not really a movie but more of a documentary, making it even more likeable for those who are curious about the legend of Big Foot and whether the subject of the legend actually exists. In the documentary you will be presented with some footage of Big Foot that you very well may not have seen previously. There have certainly been a lot of films made about the legend of Big Foot but many of them take a science fiction/horror sort of slant.

This film is decidedly different in that it attempts to approach the legend of Big Foot from more of a scientific angle. The documentary is directed by Harry Winer, who does a good job. There is also narration that helps to really add value.

Even though the documentary was produced during the 1970’s it was done so well that you won’t find yourself wanting to flip it off or feel that you’re watching something that has been overdone. Of course, whether you decide Big Foot is real or not is an entirely personal decision and will be left up to you. This documentary will certainly help you to make an educated decision on the matter. You will come away feeling as though you know a bit more about this legend that has captivated North Americans and others from around the world as well for numerous years.

Title - Anatomy of an Illness
Starring - Ed Asner, Eli Wallach, Millie Perkins, David Ogden Stiers
Directed by - Richard T. Heffron
Producer(s) - Peter J. Thompson
Screenwriter(s) - Lawrence Roman

Review

Starring Ed Asner, this is a movie that is an absolute must see. Asner portrays a Saturday Review Editor, Norman Cousins (who just happens to be the author of the book on which this movie is based). Cousins has been diagnosed with a degenerative spinal illness. The film, which was originally a "made for TV movie," first aired in 1984; however, the story itself is set in 1964. Cousins, although naturally upset at the prognosis refuses to go down without a fight. Unable to accept the prognosis he has been given, to remain a vegetable the rest of his life, he begins to battle his illness using whatever weapons he has available to him. This includes the support of his wife, his own sense of humanity and the belief that he will make it through this no matter what.

This touching film covers the spiritual battle that anyone who finds themselves in such a situation would endure. While it does an excellent job of portraying the emotions of a patient in an extremely difficult situation, there are also plenty of humorous moments.

As noted earlier, the film was based on a book written by Norman Cousins himself and the experiences he dealt with. Whether you’re simply looking for a really good movie, know someone who is dealing with a difficult prognosis or you are facing one yourself, this is a must see film. You will come away feeling uplifted and hopeful while at the same time understanding the Anatomy of an Illness much better.

Title - The Devil and Leroy Bassett
Starring - George "Buck" Flower, Elliot Lindsay, Dick Winslow, James Ward
Directed by - Robert E. Pearson
Producer(s) - Frank Johnson, Robert E. Pearson
Screenwriter(s) - Robert E. Pearson

Review

This film is sort of a modern day take on the traditional western. It begins with a crook breaking out of jail, killing the deputy and escaping on a road trip with his two brothers. As it turns out the brothers are somewhat murderous. What ensues will leave you clutching the edge of your seat waiting for the thrilling end.

This is the type of movie where you find yourself rooting for the bad guys whether you really want to or not. There are some really good adventure/action scenes as they are on the road. Also some really good comic relief scenes.

You won’t want to miss this film. It will definitely be one you will want to see time and time again. If you like a twist on a classic favorite, you will love this film. It combines everything you love about westerns while adding in a few new modern twists. You won’t forget this film.
