Screenwriter(s) - Chow Chen Kon

Review

Two Japanese prisoners are sent to manage a Chinese labor camp during World War II. The workers begin to revolt when the new Japanese managers push them too far. Wei Chi-Wan, Wei Tze Yung and Lee Hzu star in this movie, directed by Ng Yu Chen, also better well known as John Woo.

The movie exemplifies an anti-Japanese feeling commonly apparent in Chinese films. During the film one of the bad guys actually becomes a good guy, although it should be noted that he is killed before the end of the movie (thanks reviewer). One of the best things about this movie is that it doesn’t tend to be as incoherent as many of the other martial arts films out there but like most martial arts films the standard bad editing and direction is present along with plenty of out of focus photography shots. If you happen to like Woo as a director, this is a good movie to see, especially if you like his action sequences; which tend to be quite extraordinary in this movie.

Title - Chase Step by Step

Directed by - Yur Min Sheoug
Producer(s) - King Hu

Review

If you’re a fan of classic martial arts movies, you’ll be sure to love this particular film. It features a relatively simple plot. There is no personal vendetta or revenge, like in many other movies. Instead, the plot of the movie features a hero and heroine who are on a mission to deliver a specific box. The box contains money to fund relief for a drought stricken community. As it would turn out, word gets out on what they’re up to and there are other people who want to have the box.

There are some really neat characters in this movie as well as several cool villains. The knife and sword specialists are also pretty neat. The stunts are really terrific and will leave you in awe. Unlike a lot of other similar movies there are no super powers, but the kung fu stunts are really amazing and graceful. Be aware that there are no sub-titles but because the plot is so simple you really don’t need them and the dialogue is in English.

The fact that the kung-fu is practically continuous throughout the movie is nice. If you’ve never heard of this movie, do be sure to watch it, if for no other reason than the fact that Hsu Feng stars. She is very probably one of the most elegant and beautiful of the femme fetales of this particular period in film history. She actually appeared in four of King Hu’s classic films. She later went on to produce films such as Red Dust after her acting career was basically finished.

Title - Black Fist
Starring - Richard Lawson, Philip Michael Thomas, Annazette Chase, Dabney Coleman
Directed by - Timothy Galfas
Producer(s) - William Larrabure & Richard Kaye
Screenwriter(s) - Tim Kelly

Review

Black Fist, one of the many martial arts films produced during the mid-1970’s, zeros in on a young man who works on the streets of Los Angeles as a street fighter, Leroy Fist. Fist, who is portrayed by Richard Lawson, becomes involved with the mob and actually begins working for the local mob boss. During this time he works with a wide variety of seedy characters, including hoodlums and even some dirty cops. Eventually he changes his mind and decides that he wants to try to change his life.

After receiving a large sum of money from a successful fight he purchases his own club. He soon discovers that his decision to break free isn’t as easy as he had originally thought. The mob kills his wife and Fist finds himself forced to seek revenge and retribution for the killing. The process of his revenge shows a lot of exhilarating and exciting action that will be sure to thrill any martial arts fan.

This film was also released under the names of Black Streetfighter and Homeboy. This is an excellent film, filled with a lot of exciting action and adventure. Unlike some martial arts films, there isn’t a lot of deep characterization; however, if you’re simply looking for a film to wow you for a couple of hours with some amazing martial arts stunts and tricks, this one is a winner to choose.

Title - 4 Robbers
Starring - Shek Hon, Lau Chun Fat, Lee Wing Shan, Ng Kong Seng, Charlie Cho
Directed by - Addy Sung
Producer(s) - Liu Shue Tong & Cheung Che
Screenwriter(s) - ?

Review

Charlie Cho and Shek Hon star in this action packed martial arts film. The plot tracks four criminals from the Chinese mainland who travel to Hong Kong for the purpose of finding money. The four robbers (hence the name of the movie) share a very close relationship as they attempt to find their fortune.

For the most part, this movie isn’t about deep characterization or even really the plot, but you don’t mind it so much because the action is so exhilarating and exciting that it alone is enough to watch this film and really enjoy it. The stunts and tricks are absolutely amazing and are quite fast paced.

For martial arts fans, this is definitely a movie worth catching.
