Review

The excitement begins when three children stumble upon a flying saucer. The two boys in the trio are taken away to a planet that is in the Earth’s orbit on the other side of the sun. Two women with Midwestern accents inhabit the plant and hypnotize the children so that they begin to fantasize about donuts, milk and a hero turtle, Gamera.

In reality, all the women want to do is consume the brains of the children. Meanwhile, the little girl is back home and trying to convince someone to listen to her about the alien abduction. (I wonder why no one will believe her.)

She even tries to convince a police officer, but that doesn’t work either. Eventually Gamera follows the kids and is forced to come to blows with a monster who has a knife for a head, Guillion.

There are a lot of scenes in this movie featuring the kids wandering around what appears to be interminably long corridors and talking about alien technology. I think the word cheesy might apply. But what the heck, don't you all love Gamera?

Title - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

Directed by - Nicholas Webster
Producer(s) - Paul L. Jacobsen
Screenwriter(s) - Glenville Mareth

Review

As the title might imply this is a fun movie that adults and kids alike will enjoy all the way through to the end. In the beginning of the movie, we learn that Martians are distressed by the fact that their children have become somewhat obsessed with television shows from Earth. (Reviewer aside - Isn't this a concern of Earth parents as well?)

On these shows the virtues of Santa Claus are extolled; something that is not satisfactory to the Martians. Determined to remedy the matter the Martians travel to Earth for the purpose of capturing good old Saint Nick. Once they arrive they snatch two children who will lead the Martians directly to the North Pole and Santa Claus.

With Santa and the kids in tow, the Martians head back home to Mars. Now they face they predicament of what to do with the children and Santa. One of the Martians, who bears a striking resemblance to the Grinch (at least in temperament) tries to solve the matter by doing away with them altogether before they even get back home. Fortunately for the kids the leader, named Lomas, puts a stop to that.

After they arrive back home on Mars, the children and Santa befriend a Martian who, while not possessing a lot of smarts, is at least sympathetic to their situation. Together they manage to outwit the other Martians and ultimately introduce the delight of Christmas cheer to the children on the planet of Mars.

Beyond the fact that this is an utterly charming and fun movie, you may also take interest in the fact that none other than Pia Zadora made her film debut in this movie. It’s also interesting to note that a large portion of the entire movie was actually filmed in an abandoned aircraft hanger.

All in all, this is a great family film everyone in the family, young and old, will delight in.

Title - Battle of the Worlds

Directed by - Anthony Dawson (aka Antonio Margheriti)
Producer(s) - Thomas Sagone
Screenwriter(s) - Vasilli Petro (aka Ennio De Concini)

Review

Sci-fi fans will absolutely love Battle of the Worlds. Here comes a stray planet that happens to be on a collision course with Earth. Instead of colliding with Earth, the planet begins to orbit the third planet from the sun.

Things really begin to heat up when a fleet of saucers are launched from the planet and begin to attack space fleets from Earth. The special effects are quite effective, pardon the pun, and leave the audience wondering what will happen next.

A scientist, who is somewhat offbeat, known as Professor Benson and portrayed by Claude Rains, begins to work around the clock with a team of other scientists to try and save Earth from a crash with the stray planet. When they discover the planet is colliding with Earth after all, they must switch gears and try to keep the invaders from penetrating Earth.

The quandary, by the end of the movie, facing the good scientists and all of the lab coats working with him is whether it is worth it to sacrifice a few in order to save the entire Earth from possible invasion and destruction. This timeless quandary leaves the the audience wondering at the sacrifices they would make if forced into a similar situation.

Battle of the Worlds is a sure sci-fi classic that anyone who enjoys out of this world excitement and drama will enjoy.

Title - Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women
Starring - Mamie Van Doren, Mary Marr, Paige Lee
Directed by - Derek Thomas
Producer(s) - Norman D. Wells
Screenwriter(s) - Henry Ney
Narrated - Peter Bogdanovich

Review

In this exciting and adventurous sci-fi film, a team of astronauts have been forced to crash land on Venus. Once there, they come under attack by monsters who turn out to be prehistoric. The team is able to kill one of the monsters and then discover the monster was actually a god to the Venusian women living on the planet. After the monster/god has been killed, the women are naturally quite upset and become determined to destroy the people who have invaded their planet.

The effects in this film, especially considering the classic time frame from which it hails, are pretty amazing. Just a few of the cool effects you’ll see are a floating space car and a prehistoric monster that looks ominously real.

At times the atomic powered flying car also doubles as a submarine. The huge man eating flowers are also pretty cool. The robot scenes with the astronauts are filled with plenty of action and adventure, as they roll around in the mud. The sound effects are also pretty amazing.

Throughout the movie the Venusian women are trying to get the invaders to leave their planet, using tactics such as trying to zap them with thought waves. You won’t know until the end what’s actually going to happen because there’s a sudden surprise twist that will leave you stunned.
